Our treatment center provides non-12-step, research-based treatment options serving all local areas from Santa Barbara to Encino and Sherman Oaks/Burbank to Hollywood and Los Angeles. Of course, we offer services in Malibu as well.

What’s the Difference Between Inpatient and Outpatient Treatment?

Inpatient, or Residential Treatment, offers comprehensive care, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including room and board along with recovery services such as group and individual therapy, medication management, cognitive behavioral techniques, and other recreational activities.

Outpatient Programs, on the other hand, typically have clients coming from around the community to enter into a program for a specific amount of time per week. The outpatient programs are mainly group oriented for continued treatment after completing a residential program or a period of sustained sobriety.

Residential (inpatient) clients stay at the facility for the entire duration of their treatment, but outpatient clients go home every day and only spend part of the day at the treatment facility.

Who is the Ideal Candidate for Outpatient Treatment?

An outpatient program is usually a better fit for people who have had a period of sustained sobriety. The main purpose of outpatient treatment is to prevent a relapse. An outpatient program may have 3 to 6 hours of group therapy per day, depending on the person and program.

People being discharged from an inpatient program are ideal candidates to enter an outpatient facility to help them stay on track. Others who can manage daily life but realize they are struggling with a substance abuse problem can also find outpatient services beneficial. They don’t necessarily require around-the-clock attention or detox, but they definitely need guidance to avoid escalating the problem.

Inpatient care is most appropriate when a client is acutely struggling with addiction and needs to detox from substances along with other therapeutic services (groups and therapy).

The ideal client for inpatient treatment is one who struggles with maintaining sobriety and is frequently relapsing. Clients who need detox or are unable to stay sober on their own successfully would benefit from inpatient treatment rather than outpatient care. Clients with dual diagnosis (mental illness like acute depression, bipolar, or anxiety combined with substance abuse) who need intensive individual therapy would also benefit from inpatient levels of care.

How Long Does Treatment Take?

Recovery differs from person to person. Addiction is a chronic disease and needs long-term management. Relapse is a common risk factor that all patients must face, and the outpatient program helps clients manage life stressors that occur. The outpatient program also serves to monitor the client’s recovery once they have completed a residential program.

While some people need a progression of inpatient to outpatient to aftercare maintenance, others may only need an outpatient program followed by a maintenance program such as SMART Recovery. Successful addiction treatment requires an individual plan, as no two people are alike, and each has different needs. The best approach is determined after a thorough assessment by a qualified addiction specialist.

What is a Typical Outpatient Day Like?

Outpatient programs differ by the intensity of the program and the number of hours each day dedicated to therapy.

At Inspire Malibu, the Intensive Outpatient Program is 3 hours of treatment per day for 3 days a week.

The Day Treatment Program includes 6 hours of group therapy per day for 5 days a week.

Group therapy includes skills training, relapse prevention, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and motivational enhancement therapy.

A qualified addiction specialist trained in the various therapies leads each session. All of our therapists are caring and compassionate professionals who strive to build trust and never pass judgment. We stress that there is no shame in seeking help for an addiction.

How Long Do I Need To Attend?

The length of stay, whether outpatient or inpatient, is determined by a variety of factors and each individual’s personal history. There isn’t a standard amount of time recommended; however, inpatient treatment typically begins within 30 days of treatment, while outpatient treatment can be more long-term depending on the client’s level of urges, length of sobriety, other support systems, etc.

It’s usually best for each individual to work with the therapists and clinical specialists to determine the progression of the treatment and the best ways of moving forward. Many after-treatment options are available, and the team can decide what will work best.
