It can be incredibly uncomfortable to see your own name, or the name of the company you work, associated with negative publicity.
Even more unnerving is experiencing a visit by law enforcement agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Recently, both of those events happened to us at Inspire Malibu.
To avoid the spread of any misinformation, we want to share some basic facts regarding the event, Inspire Malibu’s history of service to its clients and the community, and our ongoing commitment to ethical behavior and effective treatment.
On October 3, 2019, FBI agents visited Inspire Malibu’s facility to execute a search warrant, in what has been reported by the press as an “FBI Raid.” Inspire Malibu’s staff fully cooperated with the search, and assisted the agents in collecting various records relevant to their investigation. Needless to say, it was a frightening experience for everyone at work that day.
Although the government has not provided details regarding the reasons for the search (which is typical in FBI investigations), Inspire Malibu has been cooperating with the investigation by providing additional records and information as needed, and intends to continue doing so. No charges have been filed against anyone associated with Inspire Malibu.
In recent years, the addiction treatment industry has been subject to intense scrutiny from regulators and law enforcement agencies, and a number of facilities have experienced similar searches executed by the FBI and agencies. In a number of cases, the government has not pursued any charges.
As we recovered from the event of the FBI raid, the publicity fallout was the second wave to hit. There are an estimated 15,000 addiction treatment centers in the U.S., but the community can still feel tight-knit and small. The FBI’s action, and the lack of information about its origins, sent a small shockwave throughout the industry.
The Orange County Register’s story, published on October 7, 2019, was the first to be published. Fortunately, the piece was written by the OC Register’s lead reporter Teri Sforza, who is experienced and knowledgeable about the addiction treatment industry, as well as being a fair and objective writer both in her story and in responding to comments.
Industry Certifications and Licensing
Like many other industries, there are some people calling for greater regulation of addiction treatment centers.
At Inspire Malibu, we can attest that the level of accreditation we have accumulated confirms we have always been under close oversight, and have consistently passed the test.
The California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) has granted Inspire Malibu a license to operate at the highest levels of care, including the following:
- Clinically managed low-intensity residential services
- Clinically managed high-intensity residential services
We have been approved by the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) to provide Incidental Medical Services (IMS) for our clients in recovery for alcohol and substance use addiction. This allows us to address medical issues associated with detoxification, treatment, or recovery services.
Unlike many in the industry, we work with board-certified physicians and follow the principles and best practices recommended for treating patients suffering from addiction, substance-related issues, and co-occurring conditions by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM).
Inspire Malibu has earned the Gold Seal of Approval by the Joint Commission, a nonprofit, accrediting organization founded in 1969, for mental health and chemical dependency services. Less than 20 percent of treatment facilities in the U.S. have undergone the long and rigorous process of Joint Commission accreditation required by the organization.
As a means of further transparency and credibility in the industry, Inspire Malibu has received LegitScript Certification so that our clients and health care providers can be assured of our focus on excellence in care and treatment.
All of these accreditations and certifications require a long and arduous approval process, and while some of them are not required to operate, we feel attaining them represents the highest quality of service and legitimacy within the addiction treatment industry.
A Commitment to Excellence
At Inspire Malibu, we strive to provide our clients with the utmost respect and compassion during their recovery and stay with us.
We continually apply for new certifications and explore the latest evidence-based treatment therapies and modalities that have been scientifically proven to offer the best results for a successful recovery.
As we continue to cooperate with the FBI in its investigation, we hope to obtain further information on the concerns that led to its action, and to address those concerns in full.
Until that time, we have experienced no disruption to our quality of care, and we will continue to operate as usual and maintain our commitment to excellence to our clients and staff.
